Introducing Project Morpheus,Sony’s PS4 Virtual Reality Headset

SCE Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida during the “Driving the Future of Innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment” panel at Game Developers Conference announced the virtual reality headset for the Playstation 4,a project called Morpheus.
The VR headset has been in the works for 3+ years and here are some of its features


  • A head mounted display with 1080p resolution and a 90 degree field of view. 
  • Accelerometer and gyroscope sensors built into the head mounted unit as well as PlayStation Camera accurately tracks head orientation and movement, so as your head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates intuitively in real-time. 
  • 3D audio technology that re-creates stereoscopic sounds in all directions and changes in real-time depending on your head orientation. 
  • In addition to PlayStation Camera, Project Morpheus works with DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller and PlayStation Move to deliver an easy-to-use, plug-and-play VR experience.
  • Unity, Havok, Wwise, Gigantic, Autodesk Gameware, Criware, DDD, Silicon Studio, Epic Games, Bitsquid and Crytek will be taking part in Project Morpheus.
  • Virtual reality doesn’t necessarily need to be applied only to first person games, but third person ones are also possible.
  • Virtual reality WILL BE social as it will support both with online and couch multiplayer.You can also project the image on your TV so that others can see what you’re doing, also enabling interesting asynchronous multiplayer experience
  • Connects to the PS4 via USB and HDMI and it has a 5 inches LCD panel
  • Demos being shown at GDC include Eve Valkyrieas well as the recent Square Enix game Thief
  • The headset will be 3D by default
  • PlayStation Camera is required,Move is optional,depending on the title
